Should Humans Eat Meat?

            While researching information on
whether humans should eat meats or not, I found some authors who have written
articles about it. Whether the author was against eating meat or not his or her
opinion was very strong. To support their strong opinions, they used scientific
research on the human body to. Though many people feel only a diet of meat
provides all the necessary nutrients a vegetarian diet can provide the same
nutrients and is a healthier diet.

            A vegetarian (herbivores) is a
person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, fowl, or, in
some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese, but subsists on
vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc. There are also different degrees of
vegetarianism which may be what causes confusion with caterers. The four most
common forms of vegetarianism are: Lacto-ovo-vegetarian which eats both dairy
products and eggs. This is the most common type of vegetarian diet. A
Lacto-vegetarian that eats dairy products but not eggs. An Ovo-vegetarian who eats
eggs but not dairy products. And a Vegan that does not eat dairy products, eggs,
or any other animal product. Many lacto-ovo vegetarians will only eat
free-range eggs because of welfare objections to the intensive farming of hens.
Through its Vegetarian Society Approved trade mark, the Vegetarian Society only
endorses products containing free-range eggs.

The opposite of an
herbivore(vegetarian) is a carnivore, and an omnivore. An omnivore is an animal
or person that eats food of both plant and animal origin. And a carnivore is an
animal or person that eats flesh.

Although most people in the world
are omnivore and eat meat, veganism and vegetarianism are rapidly becoming more
popular. People are realizing what they are putting into their bodies. The
reason they switch to veganism or vegetarianism is because they know that it is
a way healthier diet and it will impact not only their bodies and minds, but it
will impact their lives. Many people who have switched to eating plants only
have said that there was a major difference on their bodies compered to when
they ate meat.

In my opinion humans are not
designed to eat meat. However, many people feel the complete opposite. Therefore,
in my paper I will give my reasons for why humans should not eat meat, and also
explain why others feel that humans should eat meat. I will organize my paper
by first supporting my opinion, then lastly explain the opinions of the authors
whose differ mines.

Eating meat is part of the daily
life of many of people all over the world. Every day thousands of animals are
killed then cooked for people. However, studies have shown that meats are not
essential. Also, it doesn’t give anything more than the other foods on the
market. Meat consumption can eventually do harm to humans and the environment.
As I said previously a diet that doesn’t contain meat is healthier than a diet
containing meat. According to, meat contains more fat than foods that don’t
have meat in them. This is bad because it is very difficult for our bodies to
process high quantities of fat and it is being put into our bloodstream.
Cholesterol from

the
fat blocks the arteries and makes hard for the blood to travel throughout our
bodies. If enough blockage occurs it can lead to a heart attack. A diet in
vegetables, fruits, and cereal does to complete opposite the level of
cholesterol. Therefore, it lowers the risk of getting a heart attack. When
talking about the negative effects of meat consumption, it can affect a
person’s weight, cause cholesterol problems, cancer, and coronary heart
disease. Many studies say that eating things such as fruits and vegetables can
lower the risk of getting certain cancers. Also, vegetarians have a lower
cancer rates than non-vegetarians do. A vegetarian diet can make it

easier
to get the recommended minimum of five daily servings of fruits and vegetables,
but a vegetarian diet is not really better than a plant-based diet that has
fish or poultry.

If
you stop eating red meat (whether or not you become a vegetarian), you’ll
eliminate a risk factor for colon cancer. It’s a myth whether avoiding all
animal products reduces the risk. Vegetarians have lower levels of carcinogenic
substances in their colons, but studies comparing cancer rates in vegetarians
and people who eat meat have didn’t have consistent results. As society gets
obese, the scientist are finding causes and significant resources to improve
management is important. In studies, people eating gain weight of approximately
5-46%. Vegetarians are more likely to live a healthier life.

Humans have evolved to support a plant
based vegetarian diet. Humans don’t have a large mouth nor long, and sharp
teeth such as carnivores. The human teeth are short and flat for chewing fibered
food. Also, carnivores have smaller intestines than humans. Humans have larger

intestine
to allow slower digestion of plant foods. In the liver of a carnivore it can remove
toxins and the excess vitamin A absorbed from eating meat. However, the human
liver cannot do that.

According to the American Dietetic Association,
a vegetarian diet can obtain the protein requirements necessary. It provides
amino-acids to improve health. It can also provide vitamins, fats, and
minerals, needed to improve someone’s health. The USDA and the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, have stated meat is not
considered to be a healthy diet. A vegetarian diet reduces the chances
of developing kidney stones and gallstones. Diets with high protein from
animals cause the body to pump out calcium which leads to kidney stones.

A vegetarian diet can help build strong bones
because vegetarians absorb more calcium than people who eat meat. Meat has high
renal acid levels which the body has neutralize by releasing calcium from the bones.
There are many verities of vegetarian calcium that is good for you. For an
example, tofu, kale, spinach, and collard greens, as well as fortified cereals

Vegetarians are 40% less likely to get cancer
than meat eaters. According to a study in 1994 by Harvard researchers, eating
beef, pork, or lamb for five or more times a week increases the risk of colon
cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund found that eating processed meats
increases this risk even further. A study found that diets high in protein from
animals were

associated
with an increase in cancer death risk compared to high protein diets based on
plant-derived protein sources.

Did you know that a vegetarian diet reduces
overuse of antibiotics? About 70% of antibiotics sold in the United States go
to farm animals to prevent the spread of disease in

where animals in harsh living conditions. A 2007 study from the National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that the use of way too much
antibiotics can lead to your body being damaged by bacteria.

However, many people feel that humans are
designed to eat meat. As much information that there is on about how humans
shouldn’t eat meat there is on how we should. To them, eating meat provides
healthy saturated fats, which enhances the immune and nervous system. Saturated
fats contain fats that are soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. On Feb. 7,
2014, researchers at the Institute of Social Medicine and Epidemiology say,
vegetarians “suffer significantly more often from anxiety disorder and/or
depression.” Low cholesterol levels have been linked to

depression.
Saturated fats are also needed for building and maintaining cells, and help the
body absorb calcium.

Eating meats has been a part of human evolution
for more than2.3 million years. The inclusion of meat in the ancestral diet
provided a dense form of nutrients and protein that, when combined with
high-calorie low-nutrient carbohydrates such as roots, allowed us to develop
our large brains and intelligence. Evidence shows that the human taste buds evolved
to crave the flavor of meat.

 A
vegetarian diet will result in a quicker weight loss because it tends to be low
in calories. You’ll get more vitamins, minerals and nutrients but you probably
won’t get enough calcium or essential fatty acids or folic acid. Also, another
thing absent from most vegetarian menus is protein. Protein protect and help
strengthen your immune system. It also builds muscle

mass.
If you’re on a vegetarian diet long enough, you could suffer from malnutrition.
If you are a vegetarian you would have to work harder to make sure you’re
getting all the necessary vitamins.

 Processed
vegetarian protein options such as tofu can cause more greenhouse gas pollution
than farming meat. The World Wildlife Fund found that the production of soy
proteins like tofu could be more to greenhouse gases than eating locally
produced meat. Also in 2009, a study stated that giving up all animal products
would only have a 7% reduction in greenhouse gases, this little percentage is
not really worth the dietary sacrifice.

A diet that includes fish provides the body
with essential omega-3 fatty acids. Fish

Have a strong source of the omega-3 fatty
acids. Also a good source of EPA and DHA which are important for brain
function, lowering triglycerides, and lowering the risk of death from heart

attacks
and strokes. Although the omega-3 fatty acid ALA can be found in plant oils,
the ALA must first be converted by the body into the essential EPA and DHA. The
process may not provide the same cardiovascular benefits as eating fish. Vegetarian
diets are not necessarily better for the environment.

About 90% of US cropland suffers from top soil
loss at 13 times the sustainable rate. 92% of US soybeans (a vegetarian staple
protein) are planted with genetically modified soy, immune to herbicides. This
immunity allows soy farmers to douse their fields with large quantities of
weed-killing herbicides which are toxic to other plants and fish. Some
scientists worry that increased herbicide use could create “super
weeds.”
